Living Local: Soaking Up Summer on the Crystal Coast

It’s officially beach season—and if you're anything like us, that means it’s time to pack the cooler, grab your beach chairs, and head to the coast for some sun, salt, and relaxation. As someone who grew up on the beaches of Southern California, I can honestly say the beaches here in Eastern North Carolina are a different kind of magic.
Two of my personal favorites—Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle—offer everything you need for a perfect beach day, and both have easy-to-access public entry points. Whether we’re going for a full day with friends or just a few quiet hours with my wife, these spots never disappoint.
Why the Crystal Coast Lives Up to Its Name
The nickname “Crystal Coast” couldn’t be more accurate. The water here is clear, warm, and incredibly peaceful. Unlike the more crowded and commercialized beaches I was used to out west, North Carolina's dunes act as a natural sound barrier, giving the shoreline a calm, almost secluded feel—even on busy days.
The laid-back vibe makes it easy to unwind. We love picking up a sub sandwich on the way in, finding a quiet spot on the sand, and spending the whole afternoon soaking up the sun and salt air. Whether you're into swimming, shell hunting, or just catching up with good company, it’s hard to beat a day at the beach here.
Atlantic Beach: Classic and Convenient
Just over the bridge from Morehead City, Atlantic Beach is a great choice for families and groups. With well-maintained public beach access points, restrooms, and even nearby shops and food spots, it’s easy to make a whole day of it. The pier is a great place to take a stroll or cast a line, and the wide sandy shoreline means there's always space to spread out.
Emerald Isle: Peaceful and Pristine
Emerald Isle offers a more serene experience with soft sand, calm surf, and plenty of space to unwind. It’s also one of the most beautiful places to catch a sunset. The town has done a great job maintaining public access areas, with plenty of parking and clean facilities. It’s a great spot for swimming, reading a book under the umbrella, or taking a peaceful walk along the waterline.
Beach Day Tips:
-
Go early for good parking, especially on weekends.
-
Pack light but smart—snacks, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
-
Respect the dunes and wildlife—they’re a big part of what makes these beaches so special.
-
Don’t forget the trash bags! Leave only footprints behind.
Final Thoughts
Whether you're a lifelong local or just settling in, getting out to the Crystal Coast in the summer is a must. Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle both have their own unique charm, and with their public access and natural beauty, they’re perfect for spontaneous day trips or planned beach days with your favorite people.
We may be a long way from Southern California, but the beach lifestyle here in Eastern North Carolina has totally won us over—and once you spend a day on the Crystal Coast, you’ll see why.
