March for the 22: Walking Together to Raise Awareness for Veterans
Got it — here’s the updated version with that important change worked in. I also smoothed the flow a bit so it reads naturally:
March for the 22: Walking Together to Fight Veteran Suicide
In the United States, an estimated 22 veterans are lost to suicide every day. It’s a staggering and heartbreaking statistic—and one that hits close to home. As a Marine Corps veteran, I’ve had friends almost become a part of that statistic, and I’m grateful they didn’t. That’s why this cause isn’t just important to me—it’s personal.
Every year, our community comes together for March for the 22, an annual event in New Bern hosted by American Legion Post 539, to raise awareness and funds for veteran suicide prevention. Valor Real Estate is proud to be a sponsor of this event, because supporting veterans isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we actively do.
What Is March for the 22?
March for the 22 is more than a walk—it’s a movement. The event consists of a 22-mile march through New Bern, symbolizing the 22 lives lost each day. Participants walk side by side—veterans, military families, and community members alike—in solidarity and remembrance.
But the impact goes beyond the miles. The march raises critical funds for programs and nonprofits that provide resources like mental health counseling, crisis intervention, housing assistance, and job training for veterans. It also creates space for connection, storytelling, and healing.
Why This Cause Matters
Serving in the military takes a toll, both physically and mentally. PTSD, depression, anxiety, and the challenges of transitioning back to civilian life can feel overwhelming. Too often, veterans carry these struggles in silence.
Events like March for the 22 shine a light on this crisis, while also offering hope. By walking, donating, or volunteering, we’re saying to veterans: you are not forgotten, you are not alone, and there are resources here for you.
For me personally, this event is about being grateful for the friends who are still here and fighting to make sure more veterans find the support they need before it’s too late.
