Spring is Here: Outdoor Dining & Drinks in Downtown New Bern
There’s something special about that first warm weekend of spring—when the sun is shining, the breeze is cool, and all you want to do is be outside. Here in downtown New Bern, we’re lucky to have a walkable mix of great local restaurants, cafés, and bars, many with outdoor seating perfect for soaking up the season.
Whether you're planning a full day out or just looking for a new favorite spot, here’s how I love to spend a spring Saturday enjoying outdoor dining and drinks in downtown New Bern:
Start Your Morning at Gemelli Italian Deli & Bagelry
If you're an early riser like us, there's no better place to kick things off than Gemelli Italian Deli & Bagelry. Their breakfast sandwiches always hit the spot, especially before we take a mid-morning walk around town. They’ve got great bagels, deli classics, and a relaxed outdoor vibe that makes easing into the day feel effortless.
📍 211 Pollock St.
Grab Lunch by the Water at Lawson’s on the Creek
By lunchtime, we’re ready for a casual bite, and Lawson’s on the Creek never disappoints. Their homemade sandwiches, soups, and salads are simple and fresh, and the riverfront patio is the perfect place to kick back and watch the boats pass by. It's the kind of peaceful spot that makes you forget how close you are to the heart of downtown.
📍 529 S Front St.
Afternoon Brews & Games at Freshwater Beer Co.
Afternoons at Freshwater Beer Co. are always a good time. It’s one of those places where the crowd feels like a group of friends, even if you’ve never met. We love grabbing a cold beer and catching a few games of cornhole in their outdoor area—it’s laid-back, fun, and always full of energy.
📍 904 Pollock St.
Upscale Dinner & River Views at Persimmons
As the sun starts to set, we head to Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant for dinner. Sitting out on the deck with a cool breeze coming off the river is one of my absolute favorite ways to end the day. Their Brussels sprout appetizer is my go-to—crispy, flavorful, and perfect to share (if I must). The atmosphere is elevated but comfortable, and the views never disappoint.
📍 100 Pollock St.
Evening Music & Vibes at The Flying Fox
After dinner, there’s no better place to unwind than The Flying Fox. The live music is always top-tier, and it’s usually the first place we check when making weekend plans. Whether we’re grabbing a cocktail or just enjoying the tunes, it’s got that lively, welcoming vibe that keeps us coming back.
📍 411 Broad St.
Craft Brews & People Watching at Surf, Wind & Fire
If you’re into laid-back spots with great beer and even better people watching, Surf, Wind & Fire is your place. Their selection of craft brews is always on point, and we love grabbing a sidewalk table to soak in the sights and sounds of downtown. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a day out or enjoy a spontaneous stop between places.
📍 230 Middle St.
